Core intention of ABSOLUT is the development of driverless buses to be applied in Leipzig’s northern industrial area between the train station “S-Bahnhof Messe” and the BMW factory. The vehicles shall reach area-customary velocities as well as a high degree of automation. Later on the solution shall be integrated into the multi-modal mobility services of Leipzig’s public transport company Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB) GmbH. Beside the verification and homologation of the vehicles the scope of work will further embrace pilot operations on public roads under mixed traffic conditions as well as the evaluation of several use scenarios. Further activities contain the deployment of 24/7 timetable operation as well as on-demand services including user friendly booking and information interfaces. The new solutions shall be linked to the LVB’s intermodal transport control system (itcs) in order to extend the services capabilities. Additionally user experiences and acceptancy for automated public transport shall be investigated by collecting user feedbacks. Inside the ABSOLUT consortium various organisations from commercial companies over university up to municipalities are working closely together with the LVB, which are leading the project. This enables the engaged partners to benefit from synergies as well as to extend own competencies in the fields of communications, automotive, IT and AI. Finally the intended activities will lead to a remarkable enhancement of Saxony as a hub of sciences, industry and commerce. With the given focus ABSOLUT plays an essential role for tomorrow’s mobility as well as future technology developments. Consequently it is supported by funding through Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. On top of this the project ideally fulfils the strategic targets issued by the government of Saxony concerning tangible pilots for the development and extension of automated traffic systems.
Project is still ongoing. Scheduled finalization by end of 2021, most likely an extension has to be considered until mid/end of 2022 due to unexpected company re-structuring of one of the major consortia partners. Up to now the all-embracing inter-disciplinary approach of vehicle development, infrastructure retrofitting, control centre development and client interface with each step being discussed/approved with/by the partnering homologation authorities is working quite well. More conclusions to be expected after project is finished.
